Artist Statement｜アーティストステートメント
"Interval"
Understand, decide and move on – this sequence is required in many situations throughout my daily life. The demand for it is particularly strong in my work as an IT systems engineer, and as I continued to respond to it, the sequence itself eventually became second nature. As soon as I think I have understood something, I move on to the next step before feeling or thinking about it any further. This carries the risk of treating a single understanding as the answer and overlooking what might still be felt or thought.
The same thing happens when we look at what is in front of us. When we see something, we understand what it is before we become conscious of its shape, colour or texture. But can that understanding alone fully capture what we are seeing?
What I call the "Interval" is a state in which seeing does not end even after something is "understood". In my practice, I use photography as a starting point to create conditions in which this "Interval" can arise. I aim to create works that leave time for the viewer to continue looking, even after they think they understand what they are seeing.
『空白』
理解し、判断し、次へ進む。私の日常には、この流れを求められる場面が多い。ITエンジニアとして働くときには、とりわけそれが強く求められ、応じ続けるうちに、その流れ自体がいつしか当たり前になった。何かを理解したと思うと、それ以上感じたり考えたりする前に次へ進む。そこには、一度の理解を答えとしてしまい、なお感じたり考えたりする余地まで失う危うさがある。
同じことは、目の前の光景を見るときにも起きている。何かを目にしたとき、私たちはその形や色、質感を一つひとつ意識するより先に、それが何であるかを理解している。けれど、その理解だけで、見えているものを捉えきれるだろうか。
私は、何かを「わかった」と思ったあとにも、それだけで見ることが終わらない状態を『空白』と呼んでいる。制作では、写真を基点に、この『空白』が生まれる状況を整えている。何が写っているかを理解したあとにも、なお見る時間が残る作品を目指している。
Exhibition Statement｜展示ステートメント
In "Between Here and There", the aspect ratio, scale, method of support and placement of each photograph are selected to create conditions for an "Interval" to arise for each image.
Even after an image is understood, something remains to be seen, drawing the gaze back to it. The conditions for this are shaped through the relationship between the photographs and the exhibition space.
本展『その間』では、それぞれの像に『空白』が生じる条件を考えながら、写真の比率や大きさ、支持の方法、空間の中での置かれ方を選んでいる。
一度理解した後にも、それだけで見ることが終わらず、なお像へ視線を戻せること。そのための条件を、写真と展示空間の関係から整えている。
